Backup Open Source Software

Free, open-source Backup CD program?

I am considering switching to a Ubuntu OS but before I run the Live CD I'd like to back up my files to CD, just in case I do something by mistake. What program would you recommend? Or alternatively, what techniques would you use to back up to CD without installing. Requirements: *Windows compatible *Free *Available online And no, I don't want to back up to a website. I want to have a physical medium. Besides, my internet connection isn't the best.

  1. Hi, The simplest program that matches your requirements is ImgBurn available from http://www.imgburn.com/ this will allow your to create a backup of files etc to an CD image and then burn them
  2. The live CD is pretty darn safe to use just to get the feel. Backups are still a good idea, though. CD backups are not usually a good idea. Even DVD backups take a long time and lots of discs to back up a modern HD. Have you considered an external hard drive? Or an extra internal, if you're not on a laptop? The internal is nice because that way you could install Ubuntu to a new partition and dual-boot. I don't have any free software recommendations. One cheap, closed-source option is WinZip. Still, for $30 in WInZip and $20 in CD-Rs, the $50 + shipping + tax for a 250GB external at NewEgg looks tempting.
