Backup Open Source Software

What is a good backup software for small business?

I'm looking for a good backup software for home or small business. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking in the 100-200 dollar price range.

  1. I would recommend Vision Backup from http://www.vwsolutions.com. They even have an open file plug-in that allows you to backup files while they are in use.
  2. how many machines do you have? amanda is an open-source backup solution for the entrprise, but it has some limitations and must be used in conjunction with other software if you have a need to preserve system state data on a Windows Platform. Also, amanda is deninitely geared towards the *nix environment. Backup software is one of those things that you generally don't want to skimp on. It's awfully expensive until that first time you lose an all-important file that you can't recover. Three categories: cheap, easy to use, and works well. Pick any two. Veritas makes a nice backup suite, but again, I think we're talking out of your price range. $100-200 will usually cover a connection licence for a single machine. Another alternative is using native windows backup, and savinng the compressed backup file to a centralized share, where you can back up and restore to and from a single tape device.
  3. I understand that money is an issue but how important is the data that you are backing up worth? The reason why I ask this question is once you lose data, you start asking why didn't I just buy the larger one? Here are two options: 1. Depending on the file size, 1 or more external USB 2.0 500 Gig hard drives. 2. A dedicated backup server(computer)with the biggest hard drive that you can afford, with a DVD-R burner and Norton Ghost installed. Expensive, yes! Will you regret it? Never!!!!!
