Free, open-source Backup CD program? I am considering switching to a Ubuntu OS but before I run the Live CD I'd like to back up my files to CD, just in case I do something by mistake. DVD Copying freeware or Open source software (Free and Legal)? Does anyone know of any place I can get freeware software that allows me to backup DVDs that I bougth at a store. Has anyone exclusively changed over to open source and how productive is it for you? I am currently trying out various Linux distros on an old PC that i have upgraded. I am surprised at how much alternatives to expensive software there are out there and how good they are. I am a student and mostly work with media software (audio production, photography, office applications, etc). I have XP on my main computer and have been very hesitant in changing over to Vista. Thats been my main reason for getting so interested in open source. So my question is has anyone changed over to exclusively open source and if so how was the transition? Also what field do you work in, applications used etc? Were you surprised with the software? And to those who have dabbled in it is there anything you can't do with open source that is really essential to your work field. So much so that you couldn't make the changeover? Any formats that you couldn't work with that made it not an option to changeover? Any pros and cons you would like to point out? I would really like to make the changeover for good but i am still uncertain. I am pretty much using open source all the time now but keeping XP as a backup in case theres something i cant do. So far there is very little i can't do. Any thoughts?
What backup solution is right for me? I have a desktop PC running Windows XP SP2. I have around 100 gigs (and steadily growing) of data that I'd like to back up. Until now, I've been manually copying the data to an external 80gig hard drive. As I've outgrown that drive, I thought that it would be a good time to reevaluate my storage strategy. Here are the options as I understand them: 1. Burn to archival DVD and store offsite (I'd like to avoid this because of the time and expense involved -- I also don't really trust CDs/DVDs). 2. Buy a bigger external drive and install some or other backup utility -- hopefully there's an open source Win32 progam that'd work well. 3. Buy/make an external RAID array. (Is this necessary? I'm not looking for performance, just for reliable data storage. I also have no idea what's involved in making a RAID array, beyond getting a couple of identical drives). 4. Network storage? Wouldn't this be prohibitively expensive (not to mention time-consuming)? Feedback? Re "Data": It's the usual already-compressed digital media stuff: mp3s, jpegs, mpegs. I haven't found it worth the effort to compress anything. Follow up: The pricing on the online storage sites that some of you have suggested is prohibitive; ~ $100/month for 200 gigs (the $15/month is for 2 gigs or so).

Is it possible to develop a free/open source and legal CD/DVD mastering and DVD solution software? I plan to develop a free/open source CD/DVD mastering software in the future with the following features: 1. Burn all types of discs (data, audio, and video CD/DVD) 2. DVD authoring and Video editing / conversion. 3. Audio/Video Player (the included DVD decoder cannot be used with other video player) 4. Backup computer files. 5. ISO file creation. 6. disc copying (does not support the copyright-protected DVD.). I will not use the GPL license. Instead, I will create my own license and include the sentence "This software should only be used for legal purposes. If you try to do any illegal things with this software, including but not limited to copyrighted disc protection, the developers of this software will not be responsible.". And, the person who modify the source code must submit the compiled and non-compiled source code to the other developers to gain approval before they can upload it to any website. If any features are illegal, how to make it legal without remove it? I planned to develop this software in the future. I want to make sure that all the included features are legal. What's the best on-line backup software that I could install on my server and sell to clients as a service? I have a few clients that they are on the verge of needing an off site backup solution and I would like to capitalize on the possible monthly revenue...... but I cant find an online backup (server side) software that would be very good. I know someone has got to have made some by now. Even open source I would consider. It needs to granularly handle exhange mostly and hopefully open files. Any ideas??
Windows Backup Software with EXT3 support (diff backup without archive bit)? What is a good, backup software for linux? We have 3 linux (RedHat ES3) We are thinking we want commercial software, but open source software is not out of the question. I definitely want a central management interface, so I can schedule/backup/restore, from on single machine/tape drive. I want something with DR bare-metal restore capabilities. Ease of installation, and administration, is much much preferred -- If there are specific advantages (and really good documentation community support, like for a good OpenSource option), I might be willing to give a little "ease" up -- but for the most part we want something that wont take a lot a time to set up and maintain. Not necessary but .. We might actually decide to use DVD DL media for our backups. If we did, it would be nice if the software had a windows interface for the management, so the discs could be burned from on the windows machine with the DVD DL drive. Anyway -- interested to hear what people thing about the different options that are out there!!

PHP CMS and Open Source - Profiting? I have spent the last year and several months developing a content management in PHP. It technically was finished a long time ago, and I continued to go back and revise it, a few times from the ground up. I originally intended to use this for personal sites here and there, as most other CMS' I've used were large, bloated, and very resource intensive ( Joomla for example ). Though I loved Joomla, I just can't afford to use it anymore with more than one site on VPS hosting. The CMS I made now is kind of like a mixture between Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal; all the best rolled into one much smaller package. So far from testing, it runs faster than either of the three listed and has most all the same features. It can be extended with components and plugins very easily ( like Joomla, but much, much easier ), supports SEF out of the box with complete control over URL structure, etc. It has alot of useful features I didn't find in either package as well; resources to create and maintain backups of site settings and database, etc. I have spent so much time optimizing ( about the last 6 months on optimizing alone ) and page caching. A cached page generates one database query by default, a non cached page generates two ( this is before or after logging in ). Not to mention, the CMS by default has alot of Ajaxed features. The admin ( in which you can rename and relocate for security ) has alot of nice Ajax for managing, adding pages, etc. It also has a forum component that natively integrates with the CMS, which too uses some good Ajax implementation. So far it runs REALLY good, I am thoroughly impressed with the final product. My question is, since I am in need of money and don't want to sell the script ( it WILL be open source ), what is the best way to make a profit from Open Source without making it a commercial product? Do ads like Adsense really do any good? Those interested probably will know exactly what the ads are and definetly won't click them, so how else can you make money from such a product?

Anyone know of a good program for syncing data between a usb drive and local folder? I'm looking for something, preferably freeware/open-source that will automatically sync my pen drive when I plug it in. I had a scare recently where an older pen drives corrupted and lost all my data for which I had no recent backup. It would be nice that when I plug it in it would refresh the backup on the local folder.to keep me up to date.
How can I get Windows Vista "Backup and Restore" to work with a Truecrypt-encrypted external hard drive? I used Truecrypt (very popular open source full encryption program, free download) to encrypt an entire external hard drive. When I need to access the drive, I plug it in and "mount" it using the Truecrypt desktop software, which mounts the entire drive as a virtual volume (e.g., "drive M"). Windows still recognizes the drive (e.g., "drive E"), but windows thinks that drive E is unformated, but can access drive M without any problems. I can copy files to drive M, watch movies off it, even backup FILES to it without problems. The problem arises when I try to use the built-in Windows Vista (ultimate) "Backup and Restore" application. I want to create a full disk image of my laptop drive, and save it on the external drive (plenty of room for it). BUT, when I run Backup and Restore, it fails to recognize Drive M!! Doh. Am I out of luck? Do I have to run a different backup program? If so, any recommendations? Thanks!

How can I access a Unix tar tape on my SCSI DAT drive on my Windows PC? I have some tar files that were created on a Unix workstation that I would like to access from my PC. I have a SCSI DAT drive (Archive Python 28388-XXX) on my PC but the software that I have on my system (Win98) only recognizes Windows backup format. I have tried DATman99, but in the raw block reading mode I have to know in advance how many blocks are in a tar archive file and I don't see how to determine that directly from the information that I have. I have tried doing a 'live' boot of Linux (Knoppix), but it doesn't recognize my SCSI drive directly. I am familiar with HP-UX and the 'stape' driver, but I can't find the equivalent in the Knoppix distribution. I prefer free/open source solutions, but I would pay to get a workable solution that can safely transfer these files. Thank you in advance for your time!

Is there backup software that can create a snapshot of your OS and save settings without copying everything? Okay, so here's my dilemma. I have a lot of software on my computer that I can easily just reinstall from disk, re-download, etc, and there's really no need to use the time or space to copy it all. Is there a way to back up just things like settings, bookmarks, and documents and a keep a record of what is installed without copying EVERYTHING? Free and open source is preferable. By snapshot I really meant a snapshot. As if someone had taken a picture of my directory trees. I don't care if I have to reinstall the programs themselves...I just hate not knowing what I'm missing until I need it after a format.

is it possible to recover lost files if windows dies any You use the recovery CDs? So last night when I was shutting down my computer, I got a bunch of allerts notifying me that some files were corrupted. Most of them were associated with skype and were .dll type on all the alerts, windows continued to shutdown. I was really tired so I figured whatever, I'll do it tomorrow.files. Windows recomended I do something (cant remember exactly what), So I was gonna do it, but then after I had clicked okay This morning when I got up and turned on my computer, windows wouldent load. It just when to a blank screen with a little white line in the top left corner. I tried typing and clicking and stuff but nothing happened. So I turned it off and tried again (this has on occasion happened before when it just goes to a blank screen, I just turned it off and on again and it always works). so after a thousand tries turning it on and off and even switching the battery, unpugging everything, and everything else I could think of, I still just always got that blank screen. So before it gets to that point, I pressed enter (I dont know what it's called , "safe mode" maybe?) anyway, I was looking for a way to possibly either manually restart windows or somehow fix the problem. Anyway, I couldent find even a hint that windows ever existed. So eventually I gave up and used what is called the "recovery CD". Now windows works again. But all my files are gone (blank slate). What I want to know is if it is at all possible to recover them? It's not like I have an essay due tomorrow or any like that, but I would like my files back. Most of the programs I had were free or open source type thing, but I noticed that I no longer have microsoft office. I thought that came free with windows? I have 3 recovery CDs here, yet it never asked for the second or third ones to be installed after I had used CD 1. Why? would microsoft office possibly be on one of those? I know I should have probibly taken it to a pro or at least reaserched how to fix it on a school computer before I fucked with it. But well, paying someone for computer help is the unthinkable to me. I'm not, as my situation may lead you to believe, stupid. I consider myself very computer literate. Usually I get help from my dad, because he owns a software company and knows this stuff. But he always tells me to make back ups, but I never do. Help coying files/images. Error stating "Cannot read source file".? I am supporting a friend of a friend recover some digital photo's from there PC but they cannot copy the pictures. The the users description (I have not seen this personally yet) I am being told that they can search for and find the pictures(and even open the picture for viewing), but when they try to copy and paste the images to back them up they receive an error message stating something like "Error copying file(s), cannot read source file" or something to that extent. Could anyone recommend any software tools I can download in advance of trying to recover there pictures, or what I should try? I will probably try to boot in safe mode first to backup the files, but I don't know if that will help. This is a business computer in there small office so I want to try and be prepared when i get there. Thanks in advance! Iron Chef - I was going to try your method if all else fails. If they can infact open the image I will take a screen print, paste it to word or paint but there will obviously be lose of resolution using that method so I would love to be able to get a copy of the actual file.

I found some files in my CPU, can I delete them w/o any troubles ? I started off trying to get out all the windows media player files out so I could just download a codec media pack that was easier if you didnt already have a "Win. Media Player" I know all there is about the internet, even some website design and semi-impressive Goolge hacking. But when it comes to the CPU and it's function I am a total newbie. I learned using other people's CPU's, nobody wants someone that doesnt know nada inside their computer ya dig. But now I bought a old 2002 piece of crapola,& trying to get everything in order on it. I am big into "open source" and I could care less if I lose any microsoft support or updates.the first thing I did was D.L.Win XP anti spy, and disabled any way they can get on my CPU. I give Mozilla free rein though. Firefox is my default. Can I use Marathon for a backup and erase Explorer ? I only have 10GB HD. Can I scrap these folders I found taking up space... Online services ? NetMeeting ? ActiveSync ? Outlook express ? Website Cache ?
Best future-proof music format? I'm ripping my music collection to get a backup of everything. I am ripping it as ogg files, but I was wondering if this file format will still be around in twenty or thirty years. any tools on backing up data onto an external drive? I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini that I really like, and I'm going to install Windows 7 RC on another hard drive. The problem is, I create folders on my personal folder and on the desktop and it would be a pain to drag and drop the files into my portable drive. So, I want to find out any backup utility that can backup my files for me, and I need one that is free, open-source (or it can be just freeware, No trialware, or shareware) that could do the job.

Opinions on the anti-virus/anti-spyware program ClamWin? The tech guy on the news reccommends this open-source program, but I just want to know if it's worth downloading until I get the backup CDs for the program I was already using ( i had to wipe the memory on computer ). Interested in Linux Distro's. How do I start. I dont know much about them? I've just recovered from a scathing virus attack, which killed off my data, as well as had infected my backups in spite of AV software Have heard that Linux, is mostly virus free and has less security issues that current XP systems I'm kinda in the dark about Linux distro's and wud like to make the change, perhaps using a dual boot as 100% of my work is windows based rite now. Ultimate Computer Question.. uninstalling avg, easy right? Lets see!? Ok so you're probably sniggering at how easy it is to uninstall AVG right? Well i'm not exactly computer ignorant so it is a bit of a problem here it goes. Ok first i want to download firefox and msn, but my computer never lets me download things, i can't even open attachments from emails. I research the internet and find that there are more people who've had this problem and they also have the answer uninstall avg! I go into uninstall avg (version 8.5 btw) in the control panel, everythings fine and running smoothly until the loading ends, "Uninstall Failed" "1 error and 1 warning occured. Click Details to show more information" Clicked details "Local machine: installation failed Initialization: Warning: Checking of state of the item file avgcsrvx.exe failed. File opening failed. %FILE% = "" Error 0xe001042c Installation: Error: Action failed for file avgcsrvx.exe: creating backup.... I'm pretty pissed off, every single person who had my problem could atleast download and wanted to get rid of avg for a different reason, soooooo i decide to try and restore my system I can only take it back to mid december and avg was put onto the computer months and months and months ago, so there's nothing i can do... please someone help! possible idea for a self powered car? alright well we know the grinding of metal can cause electricity or something like grinding like.. the spinning of something and when the wheels move they can produce electricity that is stored in a battery and there can be a car that runs on gas but when its about 10% empty it switches to its backup power source (the power wich was created with the moving of the wheels) wellll and yeaaa its like its always making power.. sooo.... theres no basic need for recharging just gas.. ans it can also be fuel efficient and it might also have a battery that fills on solar power so the lights can power up in the morning so at night they can be used and it would have perhaps a solar powered a/c so when the suns out and its hot it can be powering the a/c to keep you cool at the same time and it would have gps and all the regular things from nowadays and it would have a engine that could switch between diesel, regular gas, and perhaps ethanol and im guessing this could be built for under $50k so... its a good idea right? dont u think give me your opinion :] (this idea is open for change, you can take it but dont claim it as your own unless u think ur super cool and cant give credit :( lol.. but if youre thinking about submitting this idea give me 2% credit :] )
Cydia won't open on my 3G after i installed an application? Hi guys. So my problem of the day ( LOL ) is that of course Cydia won't boot up anymore. Sometimes it takes me to the Loading screen and then it just quits by itself as if i pressed the home button. This happened as i was installing "All sources" and as it was installing my iPhone just died and started rebooting . I waited like 10 min for the phone to boot up. As i got into the "main menu " , i tapped Cydia to try again and that's when it all started. Before anybody gives me any advice , know that i don't have SSH installed but i do have SBSettings if that helps with anything. And i also tried to restore from a backup but that didn't work either . I just hope i won't have to completely restore it.

i cant uninstall avg? i repaired windows one day and after the repair when i booted my pc i got an avg message telling me i needed to enter my license number, despite the fact that i had the free version. i tried to uninstall but every time i try i get a message saying there was one error and one warning and that it was unable to complete the uninstallation. How do i fix my computer.? Ok just a little while ago my computer was working perfectly fine. A couple days later everything went south. First of all i suspect a virus. I can not open anything. If i was to try to uninstall programs an application not found error comes up. And EXE.32 is always appearing in a bunch of those messages. I think i found the source program that gave me the virus but it won't let me delete it. It says access denied whenever i try to delete it. I found out later i could delete everything using command prompt. Theres one problem when i go to open up command prompt it asks me what program i want to open command prompt with. It does this for every program that doesn't give me an application error when i try to open it. Even with the internet it asks me what program do you wish to open mozilla foxfire with and i just open it will mozilla because it is on the list. I know it is dumb. I just want to know how and what i have to do to get my computer working again. I bet alot of you are going to say put all your files into a backup whatsahoozet. NO! I don't know how to do that kind of stuff. I has a disk operating system cd thing. I also have other cds but they all say that it is already installed and only use it to reinstall them. If the answer is using a cd what cd and where do i get it. it is a dell desktop. But no i don't know where i bought it because my uncle got it for free when he bought a car and then he gave it to us. My computers hardrive is messed up. What should I do? Basically this is what happened. I think I left the computer on to long and one night I woke up from my sleep because the computer was making a strange buzzing noise. i tried to shut down the computer the monitor would turn of but the computer wont. Then tried to turn it back on still it was producing the noice and the desktop would go black on its screen and never reach the desktop. So I opened the computer and found out the source of the noise was the hardrive. Through some experiment I figured out that the hardrive would work again if it is flipped upside down. My comp did not come with a restore cd. What I would like to know is what can I do to either fix it or replace the hard disk. I did buy a new one but I do not know what to do from here. I tried to make a backup cd but when i put it in with the new hard drive nothing happend. Is my only option getting a new OS? And would that even work? If I did so would the devices in my comp be recognized? Please help!
Fixing Sims 2 for MAC OSX 10.4.11? Hey guys, I haven't played my Sims 2 game in a while and wanted to play it today. When I clicked on it, I couldn't open it. So, by doing some research I found out that the new QuickTime 7.6 (which I installed at my last update) is what is causing the problem here. By researching my problem on the internet I found that Aspyr released something that you can download to fix the problem. I really really don't want to lose any of progress I have made in the game. By researching, I've found that I can backup my files...but I am not sure how to do that. Do I need an outside source to put the back-ups on, like a flash drive? Is it as easy as drag and drop? Also, I found that by installing the Aspyr solution caused some people's iTunes to mess up. What does Vista or HP Error Code 0X4001100200001005 mean? I have a 1 ½ yr. old, HP Pavilion Elite m9040n (see below) and it is has 2 partitions [C and D (recovery partition)].. This all started when Vista updates started failing. It kept getting stuck on the 2nd of the 1 of 3 updates. Would have to reboot PC and could get back into Windows until all that finally failed. Then I would try restore to an earlier point until that wouldn’t work either, so got Recovery Disks out. I then tried to do a factory image recovery and reload the OS. It originally started failing at about 7-8%, but later got to about 45% and now is back to about 7-8%. After about 10 min., it stops and gives error code 0X4001100200001005 …. If this issue continues, please contact HP Support (1-800-474-6836). I checked the hard drive both the short/comprehensive way and everything checked out OK. I did some research for this code on the web and came up with some ideas/solutions from others….but nothing has worked. •Somebody said “0X4001100200001005 means the HDD has either failed or the motherboard itself can no longer detect any HDD in the system... The MB would need to be brought in for repair.” •Another said “definitely contact HP they have a special recall that ends this month even if it’s out of warranty. They will walk you through to see if yours is covered.” •Another said “(if)you have changed hardware...added RAM, added an internal card, or something that is halting the install process…..Make sure the computer is in its original configuration.” (mine is) •Another said, “Return the PC to the state it came with…If you added a video card, remove it and go back to the onoboard etc….The restore disks look for the original hardware…..That is why I bought a FULL OS and reformat rather than use restore disks that came with the system. •Another said “I tried almost everything and was extremely skeptical when someone said all they had to do was clean the recovery discs, but then I tried it.. Doesn't have any visible scratch but they made a copy of it and then it worked....just it... a little stange but worked.. Anyway, I took the PC back to Best Buy where I had purchased it and a 3 yr extended warranty. Geek Squad called back next day and said they checked the hard drive. It checked out OK and it must be a software problem which was not covered by the warranty program (only hardware!, news to me!). It would cost me $129.95 for them to reload the OS but they wouldn’t guarantee their work unless I bought their $29.95 software warranty and purchased one of two software anti-virus, etc. programs that they sell and (charge you for loading). [By this time I had figured out why Best Buy was selling the same PC for $200 less than I could have bought directly from HP with full 3 yr warranty!] Told them thanks but no thanks as I’m not sure of what is the problem really is after researching this. My external hard-drive isn't recognized... what can I do? I have had my SimpleTech 250GB external for about 6 months now. It has worked fine and was the backup for a lot of files on my computer. It also stored all my music and my modeling portfolio because the file sizes are too big to keep it all on my laptop. Anyway... today, randomly, while editing photos, my laptop stopped recognizing the external. I had files open from it, and it was working fine all morning. It stopped being recognized by the laptop after we had a blackout. The laptop was running on a power cord, but continued to run seemingly flawlessly on battery life during the blackout. I didn't use the computer during this time, though. However, when I came back to it, there was no message about the USB being disconnected or a device being removed. Sometimes, if I don't access the drive, it stops showing up, but will show again if I unplug it and plug it back in. This isn't working this time however. When I plug it in, it makes the normal fan noises as it's warming up and my laptop recognizes a USB is active for about one minute, then loses it and the fan in the HD stops, but the power light remains on. The HD uses power from the laptop, not its own power source. It is also connected with a USB cable, not fine cable, to the laptop. Any ideas on what happened? Is it possible to retrieve the data on the HD if it is fried? Where can I bring it to have this done if possible?
Digital photos deteriorating... ? I have some digital photos from several years back that are deteriorating. On some files, the photo won't open at all (error says "invalid jpeg marker). On other photos, part of the file has black or gray covering the photo so the photo doesn't show up correctly. The photos showed up correctly on the computer when originally taken, and even a year or two later. Now, some of them are deteriorating. I saved a copy of one of them, then cropped it, resaved on my desktop, and now even the "fixed" file is also deteriorating. What's causing this? (note, only the one file was edited.. the others are the source files from the camera.) Had multiple SD cards over the years... happening across the board on various photos.. What can I do to save my photos? I've backed them up, but the backup files deteriorate too. I don't have a CD burner now, but had a CD made a few years back. The photos are stored both on the CDs (professionally made) and on my hard drive. The photos in both places are deteriorating... Most of the deteriorating photos were not touched with any editing software. They are no longer on an SD card, as the photos are a few years old. However, a few years ago when I looked at some old SD cards, even those had deteriorating files (multiple brands of SD cards). I'll check out IrfanView. Edwin, I agree. I've seen many people lose photos due to hard drive crashes,.. and I have photos deteriorating after a handful of years. I make copies of important photos now, but am saddened to lose my older digital photos. What's the point of me keeping my thousands of digital photos if they might deteriorate/become unreadable or corrupt in a few decades or a few years?
Best way to charge a laptop battery to maximize its life.? There is a similar question answered 8 months back. In that case, the battery had a backup of about 15 minutes. In my Dell Inspiron, the battery initially showed a life of more than 5 hours. I was advised to keep the battery fully charged and run the computer on the mains as far as possible. I did that and lost the original and the first replacement battery in about 10 months each. I am now advised that I should use the computer off the battery and charge it only when 'Low battery' shows up. I have read it somewhere (can't find the source now!) that the battery lasts only a certain number of discharges and charges. That gives a very limited life of battery. Moreover, when I am using the computer on battery, it goes very, very slow and many of my favorite sites take ages to open and interact with. Could someone please advise what is the best way out? Who is ready to think rationally about China and the Olympics? These Olympic games are being ruined by scandal, but it's not China that is doing it, it is us. The games have so far been spectacular, the venues amazing, the opening ceremony fantastic, but I don't read much about that in the media. I read what our respective countries "liberal" media think we want to hear: Stories of how the games should not have been given to China, how the Chinese could never beat us, so must therefore be cheating. Apparently we alos want to hear about every small fault that has been discovered in china's "perfect" games. What is the problem? Lets look at the major stories of the last few days: Opening Ceremony Faked: One fireworks fly over scene to be exact, despite the ceremony itself being absolutely amazing and inspiring this is what we hear about. We have quickly forgotten what was probably the best live show we will see for decades to come. The fireworks in actual fact were not faked at all, we merely didn't see the first 20 of the 29 footsteps fireworks and instead got a computer generated version, this was done to ensure that the impact of the sequence was not lost and the helicopter pilots who would have been attempting to film the fireworks by flying over the explosions, were not put in danger. Opening Ceremony Scandal, Little Girl Lipsyncing: Is this such a crime, has it never before been seen outside of china? The fact that the little girl who appeared in the show was actually an excellent singer in her own right has been ignored, she was origionally included for selection because of her singing abilities and appearance. Yes she was deemed an inferior singer to the second little girl, Hence the second little girls song was still used. Has anyone bothered to report on how proud the actual singer of the opening song was, how happy her family were and how insistant the director was to let the world know about her? No our media have instead, changed her from a happy and proud performer, supported by a happy family and well respected director, into the ugly girl noone wanted who we should all pity. The story was origionally a very positive one in china before our media got hold of it, now it has been blocked by the chinese government from the internet, they initially allowed the story to be released because it was a source of pride for the singer and her family and brought further pride to the chinese people, now the story is not about what a good singer the second girl was, it is about how she is not cute enough. Think back to the Sydney olympics: Our little girl singer, Nicky Webster. It is a little known truth that she was not the best child singer of the group auditioned for singing at the Sydney opening ceremony, another girl named coco was, Nicky Webster was chosen because the panel wanted someone who looked more "quinticentially australian". We did the same thing, but we don't look at ourselves for flaws. Incidentally, I wonder if Nicky was singing without a backup tape, I imagine its quite hard to sing optimally when suspended from a harness. Polution and Smog: Are we so unappreciative of what we have in our own countries that we can't acknowledge the achievement a developing country with much larger resource requirements has achieved in improving Beijing polution for the games? Beijing looks amazing, much much cleaner and with far better facilities than I ever imagined possible. Yes there is still a lot of pollution but what an achievement they have accomplished in reducing the pollution levels as much as they have. China has also taken long term pollution reduction steps far superior to what most western countries have achieved, certainly from a % reduction point of view. In terms of actual reductions in pollution, they have delivered something that my government (Australia) and many others around the world can not even bring to the planning stages. All this from a developing country with such a huge population producing the majority of the products we use on a day to day basis. American National Anthem cut short: Seriously, I doubt this was deliberate, I put it to you that mistakes with losing 3 seconds of a national anthem, might be forgivable and that might be a non-malicious human error. Have you seen the chinese crowds cheering madly for the dream team? Would we do the same for their Gymnasts? Evebn before the cheating scandal. Gymnastics Cheating: Did you watch the events, the chinese gymnasts were the best, and not by a small amount, they did harder routines and did them to perfection. Is it possible that some of the girls are under the age of 16? Yes I guess it's possible, but it hasn't been proven, and all of the olympic officials have verified their ages prior to the games. If it is found that they really are underage cry foul then, don't wait until they beat us and THEN call them cheats, if it was so obvious to the American team why didn't we hear any of this until they lost? Olympic games are also about sportsmanship, noone is a cheater until there is proof, but I admit, this point is more debatable than the others I don't have any evidence they are NOT underage, just as noone has evidence they are underage. Shooting Cheating, China Wins Bronze: Take a moment to think about this logically, is it not possible that an official in a shooting competition, might be human, and might have made a single bad call in one round of a single olympic event. It was for the bronze, my own countryman was disadvantaged by the decision, but mistakes do happen in any competition where human judges are used. Other issues and thoughts: The chinese people have made many sacrifices for these games, for their own people and for the world. The people are not the government, surely we can be happy for them? What help does our scorn provide them? It certainly doesn't hurt their government, if anything it makes them stronger as they do not block out anything that supports the idea that the west is trying to make the chinese games look bad. There have been so many sacrifices made by the chinese for these games, many willing, many forced by the government. I don't approve of the old traditional houses being cleared out of many parts of Beijing for the olympics, but I can not deny that the China and Beijing we are seeing at these olympics looks amazing, and more importantly, was built on the sacrifices of regular chinese people. Those people deserve to know that it was for something. Not laughed at because of the smog and or bad weather. The chinese people and military have performed some amazing feats of people power, both in the opening ceremony and in other areas. Think for a moment about the clearing of the olympic sailing area's of algae after the massive algal blooms, this is a big problem in some areas of Australia too, but we have never succeeded in clearing the algae away, let alone by hand and in such a short time. This is thankless work which goes unrecognised. I know the world will be very quick to complain if the algae reblooms during the olympics. Why do we fail to recognise how hard some people, real people have worked to try to present their country in the best possible light, no matter what it takes and regardless of what needed to be done, they started from one of the most poluted and dirty cities in the world (you can not compare the work it takes to make a highly polluted area pristine to doing the same in a relatively clean area). The security of these games has also been astounding, it may have been perceived as excessive and has brought some ridicule from western media, especially that journalist who was arrested during the protest coverage, but come on! Did he look like a journalist, he was running with the protesters at the time, a white guy in civillian clothes in a group of white guys in civillian clothes. Noone likes the chinese governments position on freedom of speech, but lets at least report in an unbiased way. They didn't grab this guy off the street for doing nothing. Consider this for a moment: The criticism china has received for its city wide security crackdowns are nothing compared to the outcry that would have occured if a major (or minor) terrorist attack took place during the games. Never before has the risk of terror attacks been so real and you have done everything conceivable to protect the athletes, media and spectators. On the topic of the chinese military, people and government. I am amazed at how much they have achieved with the games in the aftermath of all they have done to help their own people when the earthquake disasters struck. I would suggest more was done that in other recent disasters in much more developed countries. I am amazed that in the face of all the recent disasters in china, the country and it's people have still been able to produce such a magnificant olympic games. We are too quick to cry foul, the chinese athletes have been phenomenal so far, while i do not approve of the extreme training programs these athletes have no doubt gone through, I must give them credit for what they have achieved, their sacrifice was perhaps unnecessary, but the individual athletes deserve our respect as they have been through training most of us, even our top athletes, might not be able to imagine. In Summary, I think the people of China, have every right to be proud of what you have given us and what you they have shown us. I think there is still a long way to go so that the governments of the world can accept the chinese government, but they have shown us they are capable of great things and great change, I hope that in the future the area's of human rights and freedom of speech will also show as much progress. Chinas flaws need work, but noone would take advice from someone who follows them around pointing out every minor mistake they made and never saying a positive word. Right now, every eye is turned on Beijing, there has never been so much negativity aimed at such a well executed event. The issues currently being discussed in the world media have been blown out of proportion in my opinion, not taking into account the two sides of the story or the facts on hand. Give peace a chance, give china a chance, they are trying to show us their best, regardless of our political differences. Before anyone points it out: I am well aware of the history of chinese attrocities, I would suggest much more than most as I am very interested in Asian history in general having lived in Japan and Korea for a couple of years. I have studied it, I respect where these nations have come from, I am as horrified by the attrocities as anyone. But I also believe that we need to help China move forward, not try to hold them back. Yes the government has done wrong, huge wrongs, so have many other countries, that is not the point, the point is what we do now, you don't make friends by putting people down. You don't make progress by trying to point out every mistake. You have to acknowledge the good and the bad. The olympics are a time when we should hope for the future, move beyond the past, and look for the best in each other. Thanks for your list of evidence re: the olympic gymnasts, I have read reports on the same things, most of it has been reponded to by various officials including the olympic officials and the world gymnastic authorities defending the chinese. As i said above, I dont know enough about this particular issue, but i do know that nothing has been officially proven. Are you also aware that it is common practice in many asian countries to use the asian lunar callender when telling their age. It is not surprising that there might be inconsitant reports of a girls age that differ from official documents. The point is, the people in charge of the olympics, the international judges are so far satisfied that the ages are correct, until they say otherwise we need to be good sports people. And then even if a few athletes are found to be cheating, that does not justify "china bashing" the shame on the individual athlete is enough. Most countries have had various types of cheats in the past, unfortune For anyone who is interested, I am Australian with Scottish and English ancestory about 4 generations back. I lived in Japan and Korea for a couple years but never China, I would like to visit China but I don't have a vested interest in China. I have lived in places where other coutries are hated absolutely (japan is hated by most of asia). I can say that it brings no good. Rational thinking, compassion, respect and understanding are the best we can hope for and will yeild the best results. China is not perfect, neither are we, that goes for ALL countries. There are many shameful events in the worlds history, lets move past them. Lets help each other. Friends listen to friends, they don't listen to those that hate them and want to see them fall.
Help! Windows Vista HP Recovery Drive (D) trouble!? Computer illiterate here, sorry. It says I only have 5.94mb of 6.53 gb left, discovered when a message popped up saying due for system backup. Backup failed on the (D) drive I guess because there isn't enough space. But it won't even accept a backup on the disc (E) drive?! I tried 2 different discs, one formatted ok, then it said backup failed, tried to reinsert the disc & it said it was full? Used another disc that could not be formatted for some reason. What is safe to delete on this D drive? There are folders on this drive like 'windows, system32, logs, tools, flags, sources & preload' with a bunch of WIM docs, separately there is a file called 'bootmgr' that is 429kb, a bunch of gibberish when I open it so I have no clue what it is. Despite not being a techy I can handle straight forward direction if given.... I have no faith to figure this out myself & not enough patience to read through all the Vista help menus!! Anyone able to lend a hand?

The topic is The internet is a reliable and indespensable source of information because it holds more information than any other source. And we're on the affirmative side (: This is what Ive got so far: I was working on an assignment at the kitchen bench one night and I was using a book from the library for research, when Mum knocked her coffee over and completely wrecked the book. Luckily, I was able to just jump on the computer and get all the information I needed and finish my assignment on time. Have you ever found yourself caught in the same situation only to be saved by the internet? The internet is a reliable and indispensable source of information because it holds more information than any other source. Many people will argue that the internet is unreliable. However, I believe that this statement is completely and utterly false. As our first speaker just established, trustworthy sites have the name of the publisher and mentions credible authors. The internet has billions of sites from all over the world and opens us to a much larger life outside of our community. People can access the latest news at the click of a button, without having to buy the newspaper or sit around waiting for the 4:00 news. You can book flights, go shopping or simply download your favourite tunes. Not only is it great way to gather information it’s a great way to store it. The internet is basically one big library that everyone can access anytime, anywhere for free. Unlike books, web pages can be updated regularly and cannot be damaged or destroyed. The internet contains information that is extremely important and acts as a backup if books or historical/important documents are destroyed. There’s websites containing information such as the foreign and trade policy, the US constitution, government publications or police files. Or more personal stuff like registries of births, deaths, marriages, divorces, wills, adoptions and family history. The internet is definitely an important part of our community and our third speaker will develop this point lastly. Its suppose to go for 3 minutes but mine only goes for roughly half of that. I dont know what to write about seeing as ive already covered the sections needed for the speech. WHAT CAN I ADD? Please Please Help. Several Questions for USAF in Japan? I am planning on enlisting in the Air Force. I currently live in the United States and I will be putting the air bases in Japan on my dream sheet as well as Washington state for backup. The questions I have are: 1. Will I need to know Japanese fluently? If not entirely, how much will I get by with. 2. What job fields will increase my chances of being sent there? I'm hoping for something in the electronics field, but I'm open to anything to fulfill my dreams. 3. If I retire from the Air Force in Japan, will I be able to denounce my American citizenship and become a citizen of Japan? (I know you cannot be citizens of multiple countries as a citizen of Japan) Please cite your sources if possible, thanks. I forgot about my retirement pension, I suppose that would be enough reasoning as to not denounce my citizenship. Is it possible to live in Japan as a citizen of the United States for the rest of your life? I know that there are time limits for some, but I'm wondering if I can live off-base without being deported, haha.
How do you format a thumb drive? Are there free software available.? I think I have an interesting problem with thumb drive. I have two thumb drives both 1Gig. One of the drives E:\ was getting a bit populate with work related stuffs so I transferred a big chunk of information to drive F:\ approx 410MB of information. Everything went OK. Delete the files from E:\ that is no longer required. Thing went OK until it came to one file S, which the PC say it cannot be deleted. Not a real issue, continued to delete remaining files. On completion looked at some remaining files & directories where nothing has been done. Then I discover a big problem. Some directories & files were corrupted and cannot be accessed. Not an issue as most of them I looked at were not important. Shut the Thumb drive down, took it out and plug it back. Access E:\, it now says that the Thumb drive is not formatted "Do you want to format?" which I say no. Then I got a bigger problem!! So, I re-boot the computer and when I tried to access E\: on Explorer it still said that the Thumb drive is not formatted "Do you want to format" which I say no again. I did a chkdsk E:\ in DOS and got the message "cannot read as type of file is RAW". I subsequently recovered a lot of files using various recovery softwares and kept them in drive C:\drive. Majority of them cannot be opened or fixed by the recovery softwares which were not a problem as I have backed up. After having satisfied myself that there is not much that I can do with the corrupted files in the thumb drive I succumbed to the “do you want to format” request. Everything went well OK and the thumb drive was formatted to FAT32 and I started to use it again. Thing seems alright for a while until I transfer some backup files into the thumb drive. On viewing files & directories found that all were corrupted & gooly gook. Tried to erase the file but it would not allowed me to do so. Stop the thumb drive, unplugged and plug it back. Tried to view it on Explorer and got the dreaded message the “Thumb drive is not formatted Do you want to format?" Checked properties and found that there are more than 400MB of space left in the drive. Format it to FAT 12 as I thought that FAT32 is not compatible and it seem to work OK, but then the same problem occur all over again. I checked drive F:\ and it shows that it is NTFS I tried to format E:\ in NTFS but the system would not allow it to be done. I was told that thumb drive cannot be formatted the same way as a conventional floppy or hard disk (A work mate did his and it wouldn’t work any more) and that I need to get the detail of the chip which is not possible as it is sealed except to break it which is something that I want to avoid. With the chip information it is then possible to find the factory software to have it re-formatted. Unfortunately I have lost the paperwork that came with the drive and have difficulty tracing its source. Have you come across such a problem and are you able to provide some hint?
offline Nvidia installation problems on ubuntu 8.04? hi, me again, i had success in disabling the x-server and then running the nvidia .run package: on the log in screen i pressed "Ctrl"+"Alt"+"F1" entered my details then used the command " cd Desktop" (this is where i left the binary pakge of the install file) then, "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" then, (this is where i tried running the install) "sudo sh 1.run" (i renamed the file to "1.run- for convenience") the installer opens and then, after some screens it says : "Error you do not appear to have libc header files installed on your system...... Please install your distribution libc development package. Is it legal for an employer to make you stay and work past the employers hours of operation? I am a bartender and the restaurant in which I work closes at midnight on the weekends. Sometimes if they are expecting a crowd late night, they tell me I have to stay until they decide it is okay to close down. This infuriates me. They have done this on numerous occasions and we have stayed open till 1:30 or 2:00 in the morning when I am technically supposed to be done with my shift at midnight, or when the restaurant is supposed to close. Can they do this? Is it legal? Any website or source you can provide for backup is appreciated.
AVG 8.0 won't install. . . now what? So I'm trying for the fifth time this month to upload the new AVG antiviralware, and continuously my computer has been avoiding finishing the task. Right now I have 7.5 and a throbbing headache and I just want to get another system. Open source repair tracking software for computer shop? Working on some better solutions for a computer repair shop thats been around for about 20 years. Need something to receive customer's systems into, keep track of current status and location, notes, etc... Hopefully have some metrics reporting...Maybe even invoicing? Have a linux firewall in place, adding a 2nd server for internal services (wiki, repair tracking, etc..) which my also have a few TBs of storage for customer data backups or the backup server may be seperate.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some open-source backup software that will allow me to backup certain? folders on my C: drive to an additional hard drive installed locally? Not an external hard drive, a local drive. I need something that I can schedule backups to copy certain folders across, in the instance that my main drive suffers a critical failure. Please don't direct me to a "general" website, I've tried SourceForge.net and can't seem to find what I want. Direct links or specific titles only please!
